It’s difficult to imagine but this season is my twentieth as Music Director of the Kamloops Symphony. It has been an eventful two decades for the orchestra, the City of Kamloops, and the region. When I began in 1990, Kamloops Symphony Manager, Kathy Humphreys, had been on the job for six months and now we are both celebrating our partnership at the helm of one of Canada’s most successful orchestral institutions. The long-standing partnership is, in my mind, one of the main reasons for our success. Other factors are strong support from successive City Councils, solid corporate sponsorships, generous personal donations, and operating grants from the BC Arts Council and the Canada Council.
The reason we exist, however, is to present orchestral concerts, guest soloists, chamber music concerts and educational concerts. We also have a music school which is growing apace. This is a far cry from the six concerts presented twenty years ago. I feel I have been blessed to find a musical home in a city such as Kamloops. The longevity in this position is unusual, your support for our music is unparalleled, the members of the orchestra over the years have been wonderful to work with, and we have, all of us, rejoiced in the constant improvement of the orchestra and the repertoire we perform. |
I hope you are as enthusiastic as I am when you look through this brochure and see yet another season full of variety. I can’t guarantee another twenty years, but I can guarantee I will continue to do my utmost to ensure your musical pleasure.
